Dear Parents and Carers,
Will Lipscombe Art Award
We have been impressed with the thought and time that has gone into the entries that have been submitted for this special annual competition. There have been more entries this year than ever before.
The theme this year is “Home.”
Home is a place where we belong, feel safe, and where we can truly be ourselves. What symbolises home to you?
The artworks will be judged by Mr David Thiele who was Principal at St Thomas the Apostle when Will was a student here. David will also present the prizes to the winners, at assembly on Friday morning, the last day of the term. Thank you to all our students who have submitted entries.
Intensive Literacy and Numeracy Training
We have 70 teachers from across our Archdiocese participating in the intensive course during the Term 3 school holidays, including 7 of our own teachers.
We have room for about 20 more students who would be interested in participating in lessons as part of the three-day program.
Through the program, your child will
- Participate in highly engaging literacy and numeracy lessons
- Build their confidence in core literacy and numeracy skills
- Experience the high impact teaching approach and know what to expect when their teacher uses it in the classroom
Thank you to the parents who have already registered your child for this. You should have been contacted by Bernadette Rayner (an exceptional teacher who used to be with us here) from Catholic Education to let you know your child has been enrolled for these days.
If you would like to enrol you child for this, more information can be found in the flyer that can be accessed below. The link to register your child is below:
It’s been a long time since we’ve had a good old fashioned Working Bee (also a great family social event). We are planning one for the first weekend back after the holidays, Saturday 15 October. It will go from 8am until 12 noon and finish with pizzas and cool drinks. Even if you can only come for an hour, we would love to have your help. There are small and large jobs to do, including pruning shrubs and trees, cleaning gutters and painting, just to name a few. We will also be planting the many plants that we are expecting to be donated on “Creation Day” (Friday 14 October). It will be a perfect time too in Spring to do all these things and also to get the school grounds ready for the upcoming Fete. A link to sign up to help can be found below.
Meet Tommy
Tommy is our new staff member who will be joining us next term. He is our Learning Support Dog. He is a Cavoodle and is 7 weeks old at the moment. Sally Cameron, one of our remarkable Classroom Support Assistants, will be his owner and main handler. Tommy will be only here part time next term while he learns how to be a Learning Support Dog. We are all so excited to have Tommy as part of our community.

RE Week 9 - Our Common Home - Connecting with God
Today was Social Justice Day at St Thomas! Thank you for your generosity. We raised $1,335! We will accept donations until Tuesday next week. The students learnt about our partner school and understood a little more about the people who attend the Charcha Kiomanga Academy. We were fortunate to have Simon from Global School Partners come and talk to all the students about social justice. A big thankyou to Victoria and the parent helpers who cooked a Kenyan lunch for the students today. We are very lucky to have Victoria on staff and we know the students thoroughly enjoyed the lunch today.
Days like today remind us of how fortunate we are. We are so blessed to live in Canberra and have access to quality education, clean water, food and shelter. Sharing our wealth enables others who are less fortunate, often simply due to where they were born, to experience some of these things we take for granted. Take some time this week to be grateful for what you have and challenge yourself to think of ways you can share your time, wealth, love or material things with others.
Creation Day – Postponed to 14 October
We are postponing our Creation Day celebrations until next term. This is due to the public day of mourning on Thursday and having the day closer to our scheduled working bee. We will celebrate creation on Friday 14 October. Students can wear spring colours on this day and bring in donations for the garden. We will hold a working bee on Saturday 15 October to prepare garden beds and plant any donations from Creation Day.
Footy Fever Day
We will hold Footy Fever Day on the last day of term (Friday 23 September). Students will be allowed to wear the colours of their favourite footy team. This will be a fun way to end the term and celebrate the footy finals.

Thank you to students and families for returning books and bringing library bags each week. We have some very keen readers at St. Thomas who are borrowing and returning every lesson! A reminder as it is near the end of term to have a little look for any missing library books and that they can be returned any day of the week.
As next week is the last week of term, students may borrow an additional 2 books to enjoy during the holidays. If your child does not have a lesson next week they may also borrow and return on Wednesday at lunch time.
This week the students continued creating their comic pages for their class book. It is wonderful to see such amazing creativity and storytelling!
Borrowing days next week
Tuesday 20 September - K-2, 3/4B
Wednesday 21 September - 5/6B, 5/6KP, 3/4J, 3/4G
