Dear Parents and Carers,
I can hardly believe we have only two more weeks of Term 3 left. Where has the time gone? We had such a big turnout for the Father’s Day breakfast last week. Thank you to our band of helpers who were there from 7am getting breakfast ready. Congratulations to Aislinn and Grace’s dad, Matt who kicked the footy the furthest. I am sure that next year there will be much practice beforehand along with the obligatory stretching!
First Holy Communion
This week we had a number of our Year 4 students make their First Holy Communion on Wednesday night. It was such a wonderful experience to witness these boys and girls receive Jesus for the first time in the Eucharist. Sitting in the church I was reflecting on how truly grateful I am to be a part of such a caring and loving community. It was evident on the faces of the candidate's parents how much they are loved and supported. I would like to thank Mr Geoff Ryan as our Religious Education Coordinator for his gentle guidance throughout the candidate's journey leading them in their preparation. Our teachers: Miss George, Miss Croker, Miss Thomson, Mrs Breen and Mrs Prater prepared their students to receive the sacrament and were also there as role models throughout the journey. In addition, Father Praveen spoke to our students on their level in the homily, making the sacrament meaningful and relevant in today’s world. Thank you, Father Praveen, for your spiritual guidance. What made it even more special and cemented by knowledge that we have such a wonderful community, was the presence of a number of Year 3 and 4 students who did not make the sacrament themselves, but were there to support their classmates: Daiva, Winnie and Dan – thankyou.
RUOK Day
Next Thursday 14 September is our National Day of Action when we remind ourselves that every day is a day to ask your friends and family how they really are. The theme for the day is “I’m here to hear.” Perhaps there is someone in your life that you haven’t talked to in a while that you could reach out to and create space to have a meaningful conversation with. I am always on the hunt for a good podcast to listen to and when I think of the importance of learning and speaking about mental health, one podcast comes to mind. If you have listened to The Imperfects, hosted by Hugh and Josh van Cuylenburgh along with Ryan Shelton, you know how brilliant it is. If not, you must subscribe and put it in your downloads! Hugh wrote the book The Resilience Project which is a great read too.
Next Thursday we invite our students to wear something yellow in support of RUOK Day. Miss Salcedo has organised for our Year 6 Wellbeing Team to visit our classrooms and present information to the students on taking care of each other. Thank you Miss Salcedo.
SCC Open Night
As you may be aware, we are having an open night next Monday between 6-7:30pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the wonderful work that our SCC does and provide feedback on the things that matter most to you. It would be wonderful to see as many of you there as possible.
Thank You!
Thank you from across the seas to Ian Jamieson. Ian has been working voluntarily over the past few months in our school completing anything and everything. I have seen him fix fences and locks, shop at Costco for the Father’s Day breakfast, blow the leaves away, cart away dirt and do anything his wife tells him to do! All the while with Tommy following very closely behind. Thank you, Ian.
Save the Date
For our Share our Work (SHoW) afternoon on Wednesday 20 September. This is a great opportunity for you to see all the wonderful work your children have been learning throughout the year, not only in their class but in other areas around the school. We look forward to welcoming you between 3:30-4:30pm.
One last thing!
Tomorrow, two of our brilliant teachers are presenting at Sharing Best Practice here in Canberra. This is a conference where several educators from across Australia come together to share best practice pedagogies and current scientifically backed practices. Topics for the day range from Targeting Syntax across the Primary and Secondary Years to Flying the Flag for the Science of Reading to Effectively Supporting Struggling Readers. The most interesting session of the day is one called Pacing, Gestures, Whiteboards and Encouragement Chants...A Practical Guide to Student Engagement. The presenters of this session are none other than Miss George and Miss Jameson. Another tick in the box for why I work in the best school in Canberra. I can’t wait to tell you all about it next week!
Yours in Christ,
Susan Chant

RE Term 3 Week 8 - "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6)
Term 3 – The Truth
This week we had 21 students who celebrated the sacrament of First Eucharist. It was a great community celebration for these students and their families. Thank you to all who attended and supported the students through this important part of their faith journey. This special sacrament has two common names, the Eucharist (meaning thanksgiving) and Holy Communion (referring to the sharing and community). Both of these elements were very present on Wednesday night as the students received Jesus for the first time in this special way. Congratulations to the following students:
Bonnie Bryce, Zachary Arnel, Samuel Ballesteros, Sara Geraghty, Nicholas Griffin, Gabrielle Hanna, Alyssa Keeffe, Verity Le, Alicia Lopez, Stephanie Machin, Charlize McCann, Liam McLaughlin, Vincent McInerney, Harrison Mendoza, Lucy O’Brien, Hannah Patron, Georgina Tharaniyil, Lachlan Wardell and Isabella Wigram.
Zach and Riley Clynch are celebrating their First Eucharist this Sunday at 10am mass. You are most welcome to come to mass and support them through prayer.
Geoff Ryan

RUOK Day - Thursday 14 September
RUOK Day is on Thursday 14 September. Students are invited to wear a yellow item of clothing with their school uniform. This may be a yellow shirt, pair of socks, headband, etc.
RUOK Day reminds us about the importance of checking in with others, making sure we take the time to have conversations with those who are struggling. The following four steps can spark a conversation which could change a life:
1. Ask are you ok?
2. Listen to the response
3. Encourage action
4. Check in
You can find out more at the following website http://www.ruok.org.au
Congratulations to all the children who entered our 2 book week competitions. We had some great ACT pages designed for the book “Australia from dawn to dusk” and awesome bookmarks that depicted our book week theme “Read, grow, inspire”. The following children were picked as winners:
Bookmarks - Imogen, Sebastiano, Mila S, Brooke, Arabella, Winnie and Mila L.
ACT page - Holly, Hena, Alex L, Penny, Zali and Pippi.
In class we are still enjoying our “Guess the baby competition” and this will be completed by all classes by the end of the term.
Keep bringing back borrowed books each week and have a good look for any overdues. If children have any overdues they will not be able to borrow for the holidays.
