On October 10, 1982 a plebiscite was held to decide whether a church should be built. Enormous support and enthusiasm decided that the plans were to go forward.  Tony Fogarty was appointed head of the building committee which included an architect, two civil engineers and a collage teacher as liturgy adviser.  Designs were finalised and Archbishop Clancy approved the plans on the 25th of February 1983. Construction began on the 22nd of July 1983 and the church was opened on the 5th of May 1984.

The Tapestry was created by Heika Braha and it depicts St. Thomas the Apostle seeing the wounds of Christ and his suffering.
